THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

Week of May 8, 2005

Here is absurdity enthroned:  Using words and reason in order to convince everyone that words have no meaning and that reason is unreliable.

People actually argue that language bears no relationship to truth; rather, they say, language is a form of power which should be used to free the oppressed.  But if truth is inaccessible and morality is nothing more than a social construct, why should we free the oppressed?  Wouldn't it be more consistent with Nietzsche (for he is the father of these lies) to revel in the power of the powerful, celebrate the survival of the fittest, and let the weak fall away with the dinosaur?  On what do they base their assertion that language should or shouldn't be used for one thing or another?

It is oddly delighting to see the inescapable image of God breaking in upon all this postmodern madness.  Even in the midst of discounting our greatest strength - language - they must use words to build the very means of destroying what was previously constructed.  And even in the midst of proclaiming that society's moral standards are oppressive, they must appeal to everyone's innate sense that oppression is evil.

In the end, you can never escape who you are.
